Athletic; gymnasts, dancers, hockey players
Get to know Dr. Lowe
Shanice Lowe spent her childhood in beautiful Orange County. When she wasn’t home playing with her 2 siblings, she was in the gym training in the sport of artistic gymnastics. During her 17-year career in the sport, Shanice gained lots of experience as a patient in physical therapy due to various injuries. It was through these experiences that she learned early on the importance of consistent, targeted physical rehabilitation because it enabled her to return to competing in the sport she loves. While at first leaning toward the field of athletic training, she ultimately chose physical therapy as her career path due to the greater flexibility and variety that is available. For instance, rather than focusing solely on athletic populations, physical therapy enables her to work with individuals spanning across a wide spectrum of abilities.
She began her career as a licensed physical therapist in the Bay Area, working in outpatient orthopedic and sports rehabilitation settings, gaining experience in treating a wide array of conditions from postoperative total joint replacements and spinal fusions, to sports strains and vertigo. Shanice loves working with a variety of patient populations as it allows her to continue honing and growing her physical therapy skill set, enhancing her ability to help her patients reach their goals.
She is happy to be back living in Orange County with her wonderful husband Ryan, young son Jaylan, and fur baby Rocket Dog. She enjoys running, doing pilates, spin biking, and helping Ryan, a former semi- professional ice hockey player, stay in one piece.
Education & Training
For college Shanice ventured up to Northern California, where she competed for the San Jose State University gymnastics team while earning her bachelor of science degree in kinesiology.
Graduating from SJSU as an Arthur Ashe scholar athlete and summa cum laude, Shanice made her way back down south attending the University of Southern California. While earning her doctorate of physical therapy degree, she gained extensive training in manual therapeutic techniques, movement analysis, and therapeutic exercises through her schooling and hands-on clinical internships.
Shanice has also spent much of the last few years working with gymnasts and dancers who wish to prevent injuries and enhance performance through individualized training programs. For all athletes it is important to regularly screen for impairments and train accordingly to help minimize injuries and improve performance. All in all, Shanice believes that physical therapy is the perfect medium for empowering individuals to achieve their functional, wellness, and performance goals, whatever they may be. To help individuals achieve mobility gains they may not be able to achieve on their own, she utilizes various manual therapy techniques, such as soft tissue and joint mobilizations, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, myofascial decompression, instrument assisted mobilizations, and more. She then compliments these strategies with specific, targeted therapeutic exercises and activities to allow the individual to maintain the mobility gains, to enhance stability and strength, and to improve overall function.
